The Edward River level has been dropping over the past few days and due to the flooding out of the Mathoura Forest the water through Moulamein at the moment has been almost black. It seems to be common belief that the fish go off the bite when the water is dirty, however I have recently heard of another theory by a local fisherman. It is believed that as the Cod like to be in the darkest, deepest parts of the river and to feed at night, with the water being murky they are more likely to come out and feed!
Every fisherman you talk to has a different theory however the fishing results I suppose speak the truth! I have heard of a few nice catches in the last couple of days, a nice 16lb Cod caught on a Yabbie in the Edward and Wooly our new footy coach up from Cohuna landed a nice 55cm Cod down behind the Bowls Club! There are still plenty of smaller fish biting as has been the case all season, all baits including shrimp, worms, Bardi grubs, cheese and yabbies have been pulling in the fish however I've heard that the bigger the bait the bigger the fish, to land a big Cod you can't go past a BIG YABBIE for bait! |

The Cod definitely seem to be dominating the fishing scene. The Yellow Belly have been relatively quiet although I have heard of a few nice 5lb plus being caught. The good news is that the Carp are almost obsolete, I rarely hear of a Carp being caught these days and if I do it's a very large one!
The other rivers in the district are all fishing well including the Neimur & Wakool Rivers and the Billabong Creek. Just had news of 3 local guys fishing in the Neimur who managed to catch 30 Cod yesterday mainly on cheese and shrimp. Most of the fish were averaging 2 to 3lb they had 2 keepers over 55cm. The Edward River level has dropped recently although it is still over the 2 meter mark and is looking good at this stage for Easter. I will try and make this a weekly fishing report for those of you who are trying to plan a fishing trip in this district, any feedback would be appreciated either by email at office@mlcp.com.au or phone 03 5887 5206.
