Cod! Cod! And more Cod!!

Well there has been too many Cod caught to mention them all, many, many reports of large numbers of Cod being caught all around the district on all types of baits, the challenge however was to catch one over 50cm! While there were several larger fish caught they were rare in comparison to the numbers of undersized Cod.

For instance Bob Leathers and mate Brian had 3 days of fishing while their wives Christine & Pam enjoyed a cold drink and a dabble on the pokies at the Moulamein Bowling Club which is open 7 days a week for those of you who maybe confused!!! You know who you are! I one session fishing the boys caught 16-20 Cod lost count they said with only the 1 keeper sneaking in at 51cm. They tried all baits Yabbies, Scrubbies, Shrimp and Cheese and were getting bites on all.

Brian Robertson dragged his brother Ian, nephew Mel and mates Lindsay, Wayne & Big Mel up from Toorak and Ringwood area and have over the past 3 days caught close to a hundred Cod, with only a couple of keepers one being close to 12lb which was a nice size. They've again tried all baits and it seems all were working well. They also fished from the boat. Ken Morson took Mel out to his special spot where they caught 2 nice Cod pictured Mel Robertson & Mathew Morson. Also pictured is Brian with a couple of nice Cod. Won't say who actually caught them!

Mel & Mathew 2 nice Cod - December 2005 Brian Robertson 2 Cod - December 2005

Ken and Derick nearly locals here now landed 7 Cod on Saturday with 1 keeper at 54cm.

We did here of a ripper being caught by Greg a local who works at the piggery, his Cod weighed in at 74lb if the stories I've heard are correct!!

Whilst there were plenty of Cod biting the Yellow Belly were relatively quiet we only had the one caught by the Robertson crew, outside of that the Silver Bream were even quiet with only small numbers caught and released. Carp as always were obligingly rare! Only heard of a couple being caught and both were really big ones. Whilst we will never get rid of the Carp altogether it's good to see that it's now become a surprise if you do manage to catch one!

River News Well the Edward is currently 2.48 meters and 22 degrees, she has been dropping slowly over the past week as expected and will continue to drop over the next 3 to 4 days then I'm expecting another rise through. The Wakool is at 1.54 metres 22 degrees and rising whereas the Neimur at 3.55 metres is dropping only slowly. The Billabong is also dropping and is at 76cm and 21 degrees.

Moon News Today is the last peak time for fishing with Tuesday being ok and Wednesday better than Thursday. The next best times are around the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of December.

Quote for the weekend was by Mel Robertson "if your not catching any fish try it sober it definitely makes a big difference"

Anyway I could go on and on so much to say but got other work to do so cheers for now. Sharon

28th November, 2005

With Cod Opening only days away everyone is itching to get back into it!! It amazes me the lure of the Mighty Murray Cod. I reckon Yellow Belly is just as nice to eat yet the fishing quietens off so much over closed Cod season; people just aren't interested in fishing for just Yellow Belly!

Onto the rivers, the Edward River is currently at 2.72 metres and has been steady over the past few days; temperature is between 23 and 25 degrees with water cooling off a little in the last two days. Unfortunately I do think that the Edward River may drop off a little over the next week, I hope I'm wrong here but looking at what's happening up near Stevenson's Weir there has been a flow reduction and the level has dropped about ½ a metre. The upside is that there is still plenty of water in the Edward! The Wakool is at 1.42 metres and dropping, while the Neimur is at a mighty 3.92 and steady. The Billabong is around the metre mark and steady.

Again not a lot of fishing done over the past week, one local fella who's put a line in over the past couple of days in the Edward cringed when he had to put back 3 beauties. He landed a 58cm, 60cm and a 78cm Cod the last one weighing in at 22 ½ pound. All these fish I guarantee were released, and it's got to be a good sign that these bigger fish are getting out and about. All were caught on shrimp and small yabbies. The Yellow Belly have been relatively quiet, the same fella fished last week catching no Yella's, a couple of Silver Bream and 7 Cod all undersized bar 1 which was 58cm.

According to the Moon phases we have a new moon on Friday the 2nd December with best days for fishing 3rd, 4th and 5th December another thing in the Anglers favour.

Anyway alls looking pretty good for Cod Opening, GOOD LUCK to those of you who are lucky enough to get out and do abit of fishing again if you're in the district PLEASE! PLEASE! Giver me a fishing report. I will try and put up another short report before next weeks if I've got some news.

Cheers Sharon

21st November, 2005

Well a fortnight has gone by so quickly, sorry I didn't get to report last week had a dose of the wog and just couldn't get motivated. Anyway the river system in our district is looking as healthy as ever with plenty of water in all our rivers and lots of fish out and about, I just know anglers are hanging out for 1st of December!!

The Edward is at 2.77 metres and rising with a water temp of 22 degrees, the Neimur is at 3.9 metres and rising while the Wakool is steady at 1.5 metres. The Billabong is on the rise which has stirred up the water in the Edward down stream of the bong, however the Billabong itself is fishing very well with quite a few nice Yellows caught over the past couple of weeks.

Moulamein Angling Club had its monthly comp on the weekend with a turnout of about a dozen members they fished the Edward River up stream of the Billabong off Balpool Road, Brendon Maine landed a ripper 40 cm Yellow Belly on shrimp and worms, with there also being several undersized Cod caught and released as well. The Silver Bream weren't too much of a pest I'm told with only half a dozen caught and released. It was also mentioned that the shrimp were hard to come by. Ken Bigmore and Derick Bradshaw fished the Billabong and brought home 3 nice Yellow Belly caught on shrimp and worms and they mentioned that there were plenty of shrimp around! Obviously depends on where you fish!

Anyway that's all the news for now, cheers until next week,

sharon

7th November, 2005

Stormy weather around last night and today with good rain expected, we had 7mm last night and more expected today. Fortunately we didn't cop the full force of the weather unlike Broken Hill.

River news is all good with most rivers rising and temperatures up in the low 20s. The Edward is at 2.6 metres, 22 degrees and rising the Wakool is at 1.54 metres, 24 degrees and rising and the Neimur River is also rising at 3.47 metres. The Billabong Creek which has been the choice Yellow Belly fishing spot of late is currently at .88 cm, 23 degrees and dropping.

The fisherman up over Cup Weekend all managed to take home a few nice Yellow Belly and there were plenty of other nice Yellows caught by locals around town. Fortunately the wet weather didn't spoil the weekend too much for campers, although I did end up with a few blow in's that had abandoned camp sites!!

The weather forcast for the week is wet, wet and wet hopefully clearing up for the weekend. For those of you who follow the moon cycle the next best fishing times are around Monday the 14th Nov to the 17th November on the full moon!

Well no other news, I will report in next week only a few weeks now to Cod opening and judging by the numbers caught & released in the area over the weekend there are plenty of them around.

Cheers Sharon

31st October, 2005

River news well the Edward hasn't come up as much as I'd expected its at 2.45 metres and still rising, however the Neimur has come up a metre and is at 3.06 metres and still rising. The Wakool has remained steady at 1.31 metres and rising ever so slowly.

Cup Weekend although off to a very wet start with close to 40mm of rain has proven terrific fishing so far for those who decided to stick it out. I was inundated with wet & muddy fisherman on the Sunday who'd abandoned their tents and gear for a dry cabin, caravan and a hot shower! Good weather today has seen some return to the river while others were happy to stay on here. I haven't had fishing reports in from all sources yet but there has been quite a few nice Yella's being caught.

Fred, Brendon, Josh and Nathan from the Seymour and Wandong area have had a great weekend so far with over 23 Yellow Belly being caught (not all keepers) the largest a ripper 5lb 10 or 50cm long. Unfortunately no one told the Cod its closed season and there were also several Cod caught and released as well, fortunately mostly just undersized and were not breeders, however the relatively large number of Cod caught is a good sign for the Cod opening which is only a month away!. All the fish were caught in the Edward River on worms. There were also large numbers of Silver Bream who managed to fill their belly's before being released so if your fishing in the area you need to allow extra bait for these hungry little buggars!

Boat access could be difficult in some areas due to the rain but a couple of days of sunshine will soon dry things out.

I will put in a report next week also to fill you in on the rest of the fishing details as I still have a few fisherman here that I need to chase for info.

Cheers for now Sharon

24th October, 2005

Finally some news on the fishing front but first onto the River news. The Edward River is at 2.31 and we are expecting quite a big rise to come through as over the past week she has increased by over a metre just downstream of Stevensons Weir which should mean our river will start rising substantially over the next week Water temperature is good at 19 degrees. The Wakool and Neimur Rivers are both steady at 1.26metres and 2.05 metres respectively. I don't have figures on the Billabong Creek but I rode past it today and there seems to be a lot of water coming down that at the moment.

The weather has been overcast and we have had some rain 7mm last Wednesday and we've just received 10mm today but its been dry in between given that I've heard Moama got 2 inches last Thursday and other areas have had quite heavy rainfall it seems it tends to bypass us, anyway I'm happy with what rain we've had and its better for the fisherman as if we'd had 2 inches you'd never get down to the river!!

Two locals Steve and his brother in law Peter spent the afternoon fishing yesterday in the Billabong Creek and were very happy with 8 nice Yellow Belly all caught on shrimp and worms. They also caught and released 1 Cod about 48cm and 1 Silver Bream, the Silvers it seems were not too much of a pest which is good to hear.

Well things are shaping up for a good Cup weekend for those of you who can manage to get away and make a long weekend of it. Some improved fishing conditions are predicted according to the moon phase over the week although the next peak time which is on the new moon is Thursday the 3rd of November to the 5th.

Hope to see some of you out and about over the weekend and please please if your in the area fishing take the time to let me know how you went.

Cheers for now Sharon

17th October, 2005

Well another fortnight gone by so quickly, river news is all good although all rivers have dropped over the past couple of weeks. The Edward River is currently at 2.2 metres down from 2.55 however it is rising slightly and the temperature is at 18 degrees. I am unsure what she will do over the next fortnight as river levels below Stevensons Weir are dropping which should mean our river will also drop but it also depends on whats coming down the Billabong which I don't have information on. It seems there is a bit of water coming down the bong at the moment as the water is a bit muddy no good for lure fishing, even upstream from the Bong is abit murky. The Wakool River is at 1.17 metres, 19 degrees and steady with the Neimur at 2.09metres and rising slowly. The water reserves at Dartmouth is 60% and Hume Weir is at 90% which is great news as there is a lot more water around than this time last year. This has been reflected with the large amount of rice being sown throughout the district at the moment.

The Moulamein and Barham fishing clubs got together for a joint fishing comp over the weekend in the Neimur. There were 30 Cod caught all undersized and 10 Yellow Belly all legal with the largest being 46cm. When I asked about the Silver Bream the answer was shitloads! So I believe they are still being abit of a pest, especially when fishing with worms. There were a couple of carp caught but again carp numbers definitely seem to be few and far between.

The large number of undersized Cod can mostly be credited to the restocking programmes being run by local fishing clubs, last year there were approximately 12000 Yellow Belly and 8000 Cod fingerlings released into our river and the same will occur again this year around February.

Best dates for fishing is right NOW with the Full Moon on Monday 17th, the fishing is also supposed to be better around the 26th to 31st October and exceptionally good Wed 2nd November to Sund 6th November if you follow the moon phases.

Anyway that's all the news for now, again if your fishing in the district, whether your camping or staying with me please drop in or phone through your fishing results!!

Cheers sharon

3rd October, 2005

Another month gone by the weather has definitely started warming up along with the river temperatures which are now in the 17 & 18 degrees a lot warmer than the 11 to 13 degree temperatures we've been having. The Rivers are all looking good at the moment with plenty of water about for those with boats. The Edward River is at 2.55 metres and has been rising over the past couple of days, not sure what's ahead as the flow has dropped off downstream from Stevenson's Weir and I don't have any hard information on what's coming down the Billabong apart from the dirty water coming into the Edward at the moment which seems to be pushing our river levels up slightly. Wakool River is steady at 1.54 metres no real change there over the past fortnight apart from the temperature is up from 15 degrees to 18 degrees. The Neimur is a very healthy 3.21 metres and steady a damn sight better than those zero readings we were getting back in July.

Well on the fishing front things still have been fairly slow with only a few Yellow Belly being caught here and there. One reluctant fisherman did release a 7 kilo Cod but wouldn't let me know where says he's coming back to get that one in December! Look forward to seeing you then Brian! I'm certain things should start hotting up a little no excuses about the water temperatures now.

There's a new moon today with the next 4 days supposed to be hot fishing so see if we can have some good news for my next report. The next good fishing times per the moon cycle is around the 15th to the 18th of this month.

Goodluck for those of you who are lucky enough to get out and drown a worm or two!

Cheers Sharon

21th September, 2005

Late again, sorry hard to get motivated when I don't have a heap of news and again its not due to no fish around I just don't have anyone out fishing at the moment. Thought that I might just do fortnightly reports until Cod opening unless I've got anything exciting to report.

The Edward River has been dropping over the last week and is currently at 2.42 metres down from 2.75 temperature still at 14 degrees. Wakool River is rising slowly and is at 1.57 metres with the temperature hitting 15 degrees today the Neimur is also rising and has come up nearly a whole metre over the last week to 3 metres. So there is certainly plenty of water in the rivers and the weather is starting to warm up after being pretty cool over the past week.

If you have any queries please feel free to ring me at the caravan park on 03 58875206.

Cheers Sharon

12th September, 2005

Another week of unstable weather, nothing quite like the storm last week though, lots of thunder and some spectacular lightening shows Thursday and Friday evenings. We've had some rain about 10 mm for the week the forecast is for possible rain Tuesday night and showers Thursday outside of that cooler weather but fine.

The Rivers in the area are all still looking healthy the Edward steady at 2.73 metres and warming up to 15 degrees, Wakool is up slightly at 1.44 metres and the Neimur is steady at 2.04 metres.

The fishing hasn't been too bad, everyone I knew that fished didn't go without catching a few. Ted from Echuca caught 4 nice Yellow Belly all on shrimp in the Billabong. Ken Bigmore (now nearly a permanent feature in the park) also caught 3 Yellow Belly up to 4lb all on worms, small wigglers with a scrubby on for good luck. Ken Morson had a mate up from Melbourne Spiro who managed with very little effort on the fishing side to land 5 Cod on worms and shrimp, 1 size and 4 under all returned, no sign of a Yellow Belly though in the Edward River.

Next best times according to the moon is from Friday 16th to Monday 19th September.

Anyway cheers until next week,

Sharon

6th September, 2005

Well what a week it's been and I'm unfortunately not talking about the fishing! Last Tuesday Moulamein specifically the caravan park was hit by what seemed to be a mini hurricane! Yes we're still open for business but the park will not be quite the same. It started with massive hail stones which broke windows in the house, caravans and cabins, the wind and hail disguised the real destruction which was happening around us, for those who have been here will remember the 3 huge Cypress Trees out the front of the house well they've gone, uprooted. Fortunately they didn't land on the house. You couldn't get into the park from the mass of branches scattered all around, yet amazingly no ones cars were touched. There was hail damage to caravans, 2 vans were tipped over, I lost the veranda off Cabin 4 not to mention bins scattered, squashed and broken. The swimming pool copped it too with fences down and shade areas demolished including steal posts concrete and all moved hundreds of metres, sheet iron up in the power line behind my cabins which had come from the pool area, very frightening to think about and we are very thankful that no one was hurt.

The clean up has begun and thank goodness for insurance I've been able to get contractors in to speed up the process. Locals have said they've never seen anything like it.

Anyway onto the River Levels, the Edward is still rising slowly and is at 2.74 metres, temperature 13 degrees. The one thing I have noticed is the Electrical Conductivity is unusually high at 158 not too sure what this actually means in relation to fishing, I think its something to do with the salinity of the water. It's usually around 50 to 60. If anyone can shed some light on this please let me know? The Wakool remains steady at 1.32 metres and the Neimur also at 2 metres. The Billabong and Merrin Creeks are both running high.

Not much fishing been done over the past week too busy cleaning up after the storm and with Cod Season closed the fishing does quieten down this time of year. The Yellow Belly were certainly biting in the Billabong last week and personally I think Yellow Belly is better eating than Cod anyway.

Cheers until next week Sharon
