Fishing Report Archives - 2007, 2006

30th May, 2005

Another week gone by, way to quickly for my liking. Well onto the river system and it is looking pretty grim. The Edward River in Moulamein is actually extremely good in comparison to other areas and other rivers in the district. It was at .74cm and steady however the Edward at Deniliquin was only .42cm and downstream from Stevensons Weir it was also only .49cm which would normally indicate that our river here will keep dropping, however the other unknown factor is how much water we're getting down the Billabong Creek although not substantial it seems that it is helping to maintain the Edward at a slightly better level here than in other areas. The Neimur River at Barham Rd is at only 6cm and it appears to still be dropping, I had to look twice when I saw those figures certainly made me realise that things are not so bad here. The Wakool River is not so bad at 68cm only 6cm down on last weeks reading and has been dropping but very slowly.

Just while we're discussing river levels for those of you who were aware that I organised a petition over the Easter break in relation to our extremely poor river levels, we collected over 500 signatures which I photocopied and sent out with letters to 7 different water authorities, government departments ect. Well I did receive a letter from State Water this week which was reasonably positive, basically the outcome after a meeting with the Water Liason Committee it was agreed that in future, "under certain conditions it may be possible to increase flow in the Edward River without having any significant impact on the other water users along the River Murray System by adjusting the flow balance between the River Murray and the Edward River. Consequently, River Murray Water will in future endeavour to provide a higher flow along the Edward River over the summer months until Easter, except when this is likely to have a significant impact on" environmental and other flow requirements along the River Murray System. I think this is a reasonably positive outcome so far and will definitely be monitoring things in the future.

Now onto the FISHING! Its actually been reasonably quiet although I don't have too many people out fishing at the moment. According to the Anglers Almanac the full moon was on the Thursday the 21st so fishing 3 days either side of this is meant to be productive. We had ripper Cod caught on Wed 20th 23.5 pounds and 93cm in length, everyone in the park have been eating Cod ever since. Derick couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Apart from a few undersized Cod and a couple of Yellas there wasn't much else caught. There have been some ripper crays though so one goes quiet the other seems to make up for it.

Anyway that's all the news for the week, speak to you next Monday,

Cheers sharon

23rd May, 2005

Well Gidday to you all and sorry I was late putting this report up had some computer problems this morning.

To start with the Edward River measured at .81cm this morning and is continuing to drop. The water temperature is at 13 degrees. I'm still expecting the river to continue to drop over the next week to about .60cm then hopefully steady for a little while. The Wakool River at Barham Rd is at .74cm and is steadyish! Where as the Neimur is only at .23cm and still dropping, very little water in there at all.

I've only got reports from the one fisherman really, who hasn't been fishing that hard, he's caught 4 Cod up to 48cm mainly on shrimp and yabbies. No Yellow Belly although they do prefer the worms and they have run out of worms so that could explain why no Yellows. There are still plenty of shrimp and yabbies around, Ken and his crew just had a great feed of Murray Cray and Yabbies just the other night.

Please remember if your up this way trying for a cray please remember there are restricted areas around town and there are boundaries 15 to 20 kms out of town where you are allowed to start putting in your cray pots. For more information on this please don't hesitate to contact me at the caravan park.

I've been looking at the Anglers Almanac and this week is meant to be a good one for the fishing with peak days being Sunday just gone and Wed 25th around 5pm will try and get some reports on this one and line up a few people to go fishing at this time just to put it to the test. The next peak times will be best days between Wed 8th June to Frid 10th June with good days either side.

The weather has still been dry although we did get a spatter of rain this evening it was barely enough to settle the dust. The days have been warm in the mid 20's with night generally getting below 10 digrees so time to keep those fires burning. Fire boxes can be arranged if staying in the park.

Well that's all for now, don't forget I have a special on of 20% off on Cabins with a minimum of 3 nights excluding long weekends.

Cheers Sharon

16th May, 2005
Well Gidday to you all, it seems like ages since I've done my last report can only put that down to the fact that so much has happened in this last week.

Firstly River levels, the Edward is at .94cm and still rising, I think it will keep rising over the next 3 days then she will start to drop again over the next few weeks until she gets to around the half a metre mark where it will remain steady unless we get some decent rainfall. Around July is the time that they look at filling Stevenson's Weir in preparation for sending water through to Lake Victoria so we are hopeful that during August leading up to the close of Cod season that we should have some water in the River due to water being sent through to SA. The Wakool River is at .87cm and dropping and the Neimur is at .48cm and also dropping so at this stage the Edwards not looking to bad at all.
I've just bought myself an Angler's Almanac to see how the moon really affects our fishing. The best days for fishing this week were the 9th, 10th & 11th of May and we certainly had a great start to the week Monday the 9th the afternoons fishing brought in 7 undersized Cod all caught on Cheese, 3 nice Yellows and 1 big Carp which I'm pleased to say are getting as rare as hens teeth. A local fisherman caught a ripper 14lb & 9lb Cod both on lures one on a stump jumper and the other on an oar-gee. Tuesday 10th also wasn't a bad day with a nice 1 ½ pound cod landed by Ken Bigmore, 2 Yellows on worms and 8 undersized Cod. Wed 11th 1 51cm Cod and 1 2lb Yellow with 6 undersized Cod and a few stories of some rippers that got away!

Now things did definitely quieten off over the next couple of days with no keepers being caught, I had lots of complaints about the Silver Perch having a great feed on the worms but not much else.

Friday 13th there was a nice 8lb Cod and 52cm Cod both caught on Bardi Grubs with 3 Yellows 1 ½ to 2 pound all on shrimp and worms.

Saturday 14th 5 Yellows up to 2lb and 4 Cod up to 40cm

Sunday 15th 3 big Yellows at around the 3lb and another 8lb Cod caught on a yabby.

So all up not a bad week, not sure about the moon thing but will be taking note in future and put it to the test. Next best times according to the moon is Sund 22nd May to Wed 25th with the Sunday and Wed being best days

Cheers for now Sharon

9th May, 2005

Gidday to you all, I have had some feedback about my reports this week which I am very grateful for, lets me know I'm on the right track and helping some people which is why I'm doing this.

Well this week has again been pretty quiet, the Edward River today is at .66cm which is down from last Monday by 9cm; however she is on the rise. I was out at Benjee State Forest yesterday, and Bob Braine said the water was just starting to rise, also spoke to some people camping at Benjee and they had caught a nice Cod that morning, it was just undersized but hopefully this flush of water will stir the fish up and this fish will be one of many caught. I expecting the water to rise up over the 1 metre over the next 2 weeks, then unless we get any substantial rain, our river system will be switching over to Mother Nature during the winter and will be less regulated by the powers to be! Unfortunately I think this will mean that she will drop back down to the ½ a metre mark. I spoke to a contact at the State Water Authority today who gave me this information; however I struggled to understand everything he was saying due to his heavy accent. Next week I will get onto another contact and see if he can confirm what will be happening. The Wakool River is at 1.29m which is up on the 1.21m from last week where as the Neimur is at .53cm which is down 5cm on last weeks reading.

Well not much news with regards to fishing over the past week, there are still plenty of shrimp about although the yabbies are going quiet due to the cooler whether and I've heard that the Murray Cray's on the move. There are limits within the town area where you are not allowed to catch the Murray Cray's you've got to be approximately 15-20km out of town.

I've been asked about the increased numbers of Silver Perch in the river. I have phoned fisheries and am waiting on a definite answer, there has definitely been restocking programmes as to whether it's within the Moulamein district I haven't confirmed yet. I think the numbers have increased due to the banning of keeping these fish which was brought in to help increase numbers

Customers in the caravan park caught a nice 38cm Yellow Belly yesterday on a scrub worm but hadn't actually been out fishing other than that. I've got quite a few people due in today for the week that will be doing some serious fishing and with the water on the rise I am expecting a terrific week so will have plenty to tell you next week.

Cheers

Sharon

2nd May, 2005

Well, the week started off being warm but the last couple of nights have definitely let us know that winter is on its way. The days after starting pretty chilly have been beautiful in the mid 20s with still no rain to be had in our district.

The Edward River has been steady still holding around the .75cm, I believe it will remain around this level for the next week when we will see some extra water coming down. Downstream of the Stevenson's Weir saw an increase of .33cm today which takes about 7 to 8 days to get to us and there is a possibility there may be more to come will obviously keep you informed on that one.

The Wakool River at Barham Rd is at 1.21 metres and has been dropping over the past week. The Niemur at Barham Rd is .58cm and has also dropped slightly.

I actually don't have much fishing news apart from the 2 Yellows 31cm and 35cm caught by Ken & Chris Bigmore. Everyone seems to be having abit of a rest from the fishing and I think that it's mainly due to it being abit quiet.

I'm hoping this flush of water coming through will stir things up abit, I have some regular customers coming up next Monday from Euroa who are very serious about their fishing and this water should come down around the right time for them so will be interesting to see how they go.

Don't forget there is a 20% discount for all cabin bookings made in May and June with a minimum 3 night stay, so if you want to get away from those southern districts and those cold wintry days and enjoy abit of sunshine give me a call!

Cheers until next week Sharon

25th April, 2005

The weather has been perfect for the Anzac long weekend, there has been a great atmosphere in the park with many people enjoying one of the last long weekends before the cooler weather sets in.

The Edward River has maintained its level around the .73cm mark even though the Edward downstream of Stevenson's Weir is still at .55cm with no news of extra water coming. I can only put this down to some extra water that is coming down the Billabong Creek at the moment which has made the Edward a little muddy through town. The Neimur River at Barham Rd is at .65cm and the Wakool is at 1.34. I will start putting these levels in each week so we can keep track of what these rivers are doing to.

The week started off very quiet in the fishing department although over the last couple of days there were a couple of nice fish landed. Mark from Stawell fished the Edward River just in town and caught a nice 56cm Cod on CHEESE with around 30 undersized Cod being caught and released on the day. Mick Buckworth from Shepparton landed a nice Yellow Belly on shrimp in the Benjee State Forest, while Ken and Chris Bigmore who had their family up for the weekend got a nice 60cm Cod on a yabby with a few smaller ones caught and released. We also had 2 nice yellow belly caught in the lake.

There is still plenty of shrimp & yabbies in the lake, Bardi grubs are available but at around $2 each it's debatable whether they're really worth it.

Until next week, happy fishing and speak to you soon.

Cheers Sharon

18th April, 2005

Well, its been a ripper of a week especially given that the Edward River is still dropping and is currently at .70cm. The River is not expected to rise for at least another week or so, I'm actually expecting it to drop still further to around 55cm which is the same as what it was over Easter.

I am pleased to report that Peter from Pakenham, did finally get lucky!! He ended up with 11 Yellow Belly's all caught on shrimp. Check out the photo, believe it or not you couldn't wipe the smile off his face! Ha Ha! Peter that big Cod is still in your hole, Ken was pulling both our legs about the 35 pounder being caught!!!!

Ken Bigmore caught 3 Cod one being a ripper 16 pounder the others were around the 55cm mark. This group have been feasting on yabbies the last 2 weeks, life is so tuff at the top!

Terry and family were up from Dalesford for a couple of days and caught 3 nice Yella's.

Best bait seemed to be shrimp for the Yellow Belly, Yabbies for the bigger Cod and the Cheese & Shrimp was pulling in the smaller Cod.

The weather is at its best this time of year, cooler nights with mid 20's during the day doesn't get much better.

If your thinking of coming up I'm offering a 20% discount off the cabins for May and June, ONLY if you mention seeing this report.

Hope to see you soon,

Cheers Sharon

It's not been a bad week as far as the fishing goes, the weather has been very warm and we have even had about 4mm of rain yesterday afternoon, which was enough to at least settle the dust. However, back to sunny sky's again today.

The Edward River Level is currently at 95cm which has been gradually dropping over the week, think last Monday it was 1.17cm. I'm still expecting it to drop further over the next 5 days to around the metre mark and remain there for at least a few days before increasing again.

Dennis with 2 nice Murray Cod
Dennis with 2 nice Murray Cod - April 05
I had 3 of my favourite customers in over the week, Russell Cross with his mates Stan & Don from down South Gippsland way. They didn't have too bad a week with 9 Yellow Belly all size, 6 Cod with 2 keepers, 6 Silver Bream (caught & released) 4 Carp and 2 Tortoises which were also released. Sorry I missed you guys at the Bowls club for that drink, I'll have to take a raincheck on that one!

I spoke to some campers on the Edward River that came in for showers who were mainly fishing with Bardi's & Scrub Worms they had caught 17 Cod with 2 keepers so there is still plenty of undersized fish around. No Yellow Belly caught and along with many other reports they said there were heaps of Silver Bream.

Other guests at the park Ken & Chris and Derrick & Annette have caught at least 3 sized Cod that I know of and have been feasting regularly on yabbies which have been plentiful.

And then there's Peter and Robyn from Pakenham who have yet to catch a fish to keep, I'm sure that will change soon as they seem to be on the move at the moment, there have been two beauties caught out in the Benjee State Forest a 10 and 20 pounder, the 10 pounder was caught on shrimp not sure on the other.

If you've been to Moulamein recently then you would of surely met our current publicans at the Tattersalls Hotel, Dennis and Maureen, well here's a photo of Dennis with 2 nice Cod that he caught. Well done Dennis!!

Cheers until next week

Sharon

4th April, 2005

Good News the Edward River did come up and is currently on 1.17m, it should be steady for the next 4 days then I'm expecting it to drop around 20cm and stabilise for at least 4 days sitting around the .86cm mark which is a damn site better than the .55cm we had over Easter.

The weather has been good still no rain, however the nights are starting to cool down, so bring some warm clothes if your heading up this way.

We had a few great blokes here from Dimbula who I think despite the lack of legal sized fish still had a great time, with plenty of bites and small Cod landed enough to keep it interesting. Ken and I did spend one evening having a few beers around the fire drum, trading stubby holders, sharing fishing tales and whatever other tales that came to mind, which as the night went on got more and more interesting! I wont give away any of your stories boys, look forward to catching up next time your in the area!

Whenever we get people in who leave without a decent size fish, Ken (who is my partner for those of you who don't know him) likes to go fishing just to prove they are out there, well this time he took his son Mathew (nick name Flea) who's photo is in one of my previous reports who within a relatively short time landed a beautiful little 52cm Cod on yes CHEESE! So the fish are there you've just got to know the right spots and be patient.

Another local fella who a regular fisherman landed 3 legal sized Cod in the Neimur River the largest being 11 pound all on Yabbies.

I've got a few people in for the week fishing being their main agenda so will hopefully have some good reports for next week.

Cheers

Sharon

28th March, 2005
Well, its been a big weekend in Moulamein over the Easter break plenty of fisherman around. The weather was its usual for this time of the year, just bloody beautiful, mid 20s and sunny. Unfortunately as you may well have heard on the grape vine we had very little water in the Edward River, she was around the half a metre mark which is the lowest we've seen it for years.

I've been lucky enough to have had the Doran and Cantwell clan staying at the caravan park yet again, all of which are pretty keen fisherman. They've had disappointing results where for the first time in 15 years they have not managed to land a legal sized fish! They tried all the different bait possible, shrimp, worms, cheese, bardi grubs and yabbies, still no luck. I've been told there have been large numbers of silver bream caught, which of course are protected and were released. The numbers of undersized fish caught exceeded results from the past which is I suppose a good sign but the question still arises where have all the big fish gone?

The local fishing club also held its annual fishing competition and again the results were very disappointing, only 3 Yellow Belly and 3 Carp were weighed in. There were 22 Cod, 7 Bream, & 6 Yellow Belly caught and released all undersized.

Now as far as the Edward River level goes its definitely increasing, on the 26th March the flow was increased at Stevensons Weir from 300 megs to 1000 megs it takes 7 to 8 days for the water to arrive in Moulamein so around 1st & 2nd of April I would be expecting the river to come back up to around the 1 metre mark maybe more. Its already come up from .55 meter to .72 metre. Will be interesting to see how this effects the fishing. I've got a keen fisherman arriving on the 1st April so will let you know how he goes. Those of you who visit Moulamein regularly may be aware that the river level seems to drop off every year at Easter. I have been told by the authorities that it is purely due to the reduced irrigation demands in South Australia and that Lake Victoria is full, however I have not been given an adequate explanation of how the river at Deniliquin was well over the 2 metre mark and steady and we only had 55cm at Moulamein. I have put petitions around town for signing to try and get as many names as possible to support a plea that I will be making to the necessary people in order to attempt to prevent this from happening in the future. So your support in any way would be appreciated. Well all the best, will keep you informed on whats happening.

Cheers

Sharon

21st March, 2005

Well it.s not been a bad week at all, suprising even myself given the river level is still dropping. It was at .59 metres as of this morning, although I do have some good news they are in the process of sending some water down from Stevenson Weir which appears to have started yesterday, I believe it takes 7 to 8 days to make its way to Moulamein so hopefully it will rise a little over the Easter break, we are expecting about a 30cm increase. I am currently preparing petitions to be left around town with local business ect which if your in the area over the next couple of weeks we would appreciate your support, I am going to be writing letters to the necessary authorise in relation to the river level and how it consistently drops dramatically right on Easter, something needs to be done about this and the more support we have the more chance we have or preventing it from happening in the future. (unfortunately we have left it too late for this Easter)

Well we fished at a lovely spot on the Neimur River down off the Murrabit road, the river level was not bad and had risen recently. We caught just the one undersized Cod but had a few good bites one taking the line under a snag. Later the same day we fishing in the Edward just opposite the old Wharf and didn.t do too badly at all. The bites were constant and we lost plenty of bait, used shrimp and worms, there is heaps of shrimp in the river so make sure you bring your shrimp nets. All up we caught 5 Cod, 1 keeper, 3 Yellow Belly all keepers, 4 silver bream and 1 Carp.

Well those of you who know me, know that I actually don.t fish, in the 2 years I.ve been here I haven.t even caught a fish. I.ve learnt heaps about fishing through talking to both my customers and locals and have fallen into the role of writing fishing reports for both my web site the fishnet.com.au website, the North East Angler fishing magazine and have even been on live radio fishing shows. Anyway thought I better start getting into the action around here and spent abit of time fishing over the weekend, my first fish was a small Cod, my second was a nice Yellow Belly which is pictured, the third fish for the day was a Silver Bream so I didn.t do too badly.
If I can do anyone can, so come on up and try your luck!!

Happy Easter to you all

Cheers
Sharon

15th March, 2005

Well the Edward River has continued to drop and is now around the .8 metre mark however the fishing results for the weekend showed that the fish were still biting. The Moulamein Fishing Club held their annual Inter-Club Competition over the weekend on private property situated on the Edward River just out of town. There were 40 anglers from the Moulamein Fishing Club who managed to catch 80 Yellow Belly of which 15 were weighed in the largest measuring 42cm. There was also 49 Murray Cod caught with 4 being weighed in the two largest measured 54cm. There were 12 Silver Bream caught and released and 14 Carp caught for the weekend. Bait used was mainly Shrimp and Yabbies.

I also heard that the Billabong Creek was fishing well there were 3 decent sized Cod caught on Saturday morning by some visiting anglers. The Billabong Creek is very low and there is only bank fishing available in some of the deeper holes.

For those of you who are interested in looking at the River Levels up stream from Moulamein and other areas this is a handy site www.waterinfo.dlwc.nsw.gov.au/drr/murray looking at this today the Edward River at Deniliquin is over the 2 metre mark then Edward River down stream from Stevensons Weir is only .55 metre which could indicate that it will drop even further around Moulamein. I will try and find out what is going on here, I have been told that they damn it at Deniliquin for the water skiing over Easter however I have no real evidence that this is true, I only know that the last 2 Easter.s the same thing has happened and that my partner who has lived here for over 10 years says that its for as long as he can remember its always dropped off around Easter. The good news is that shortly after Easter (hopefully before the school holidays) she should be on the rise again.

Some non fishing news just to let you all know that we now have meals available at the local Tattersals Hotel Tuesdays through to Sundays which is handy if your in the area early in the week, there will also be lunch and dinner available on Good Friday!

Also available at the caravan park now apart from crushed and block ice we also fill gas bottles and have fresh eggs available.

Cheers until next week

7th March, 2005

The Edward River over the past week is still dropping and is now down around the 1.12 metre mark, the temperature has dropped from 25 to 21 degrees celsius. Fortunately most of that black water has been flushed through and she is getting back to her normal color. Looking upstream at Denilequin and Stevensons Weir the Edward River seems to have stabilised so am hoping that there will be no further dropping in the river level.

Largely due to the river dropping and the earlier murkey water the fishing has been relatively quiet, I've had two groups of fisherman up over the past week Ron and the boys from Sunshine who caught 2 nice Cod at 55cm & 53cm along with 7 undersized Cod. One 40cm Silver Perch and half a dozen smaller ones which were all returned to the river and 1 big Carp. Best bait Cheese, shrimp and Yabbies. They all had a great trip and can.t wait to get back up here again and have already booked in for their next trip!

Bob & Brian from Romsey first time visitors to the area who managed to catch one nice sized Cod on their first day here, but had little luck over the rest of their stay apart from a few undersized Cod. The results were a little disappointing after putting in fairly solid efforts, however the decreasing river level and the black water wasn.t working in their favour.

The weather is near perfect, mid 20s and blue skys I still have caravan accommodation and plenty of powered sites available over the Easter Break for those of you who want to have a crack at the fishing. Sorry don.t have too much news for you this week will report in again next Monday!
